Stacking Modalities: PEMF and Red Light Therapy

About

MagnaWave President Alane Paulley sat down with Dr. Amanda Myers, M.D. in a live webinar to talk about the benefits of Red Light Therapy and Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF), and how they work together to optimize cellular health.

Alane and Dr. Myers explained how each modality functions, answered commenters’ questions, and shared anecdotes about the results they have seen using each modality. Watch the webinar or keep reading to get the breakdown.

Red Light Therapy: How it Works

Red light devices use LED lights to create red and infrared wavelengths, as well as heat to repair and regenerate cells and tissues. These wavelengths penetrate 5-7 cm into the body and rapidly reproduce cellular structures, improving overall cellular function.

Clients see improvements in wound healing, muscle and joint pains, and bone growth. Red light also increases collagen production which aids in hair growth, skin elasticity, acne, and other skin infections like ringworm and hives.

The Science

The human body is a collection of cells made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons don’t change positions, but electrons are constantly moving and are responsible for the body’s functions. For this movement of electrons to occur, they need to exchange photons, or light particles that carry waves of electromagnetic radiation.

Dr. Myers describes electrons and photons as a currency. Electrons are like cash. They’re exchanged in the body in order for every cellular function to occur. If electrons are cash, then photons are coins. They’re charged and exchanged by electrons in order to move from place to place. Red Light uses infrared wavelengths to change the movement of photons, and therefore, regulates the way light moves around the body. This process affects the electron’s pattern of movement and aids in the overall health of the cell.

Red Light in Use

Red Light has different strengths, ranging from 30- 60 second timers. MagnaWave offers an 11.5 W Red Light called the ROC. The ROC stands for Regeneration, Oxygenation, and Circulation. This modality can be held in one spot or moved around the body for that time frame. Dr. Myers explains the body can only absorb so many joules of light per minute, so she recommends only using a Red Light one or two times a day to see the optimal results.

It is also important to note that darker colors absorb infrared wavelengths faster, so be aware that it may be more potent on darker skin tones, hair colors, and tattoos. If the client feels any discomfort from the heat of the device, hold it about 2 inches above the skin to provide relief.

Importance of Proper Training

When using Red Light, practitioners need to understand that every individual has different sensitivities. Red Light practitioners should complete proper training in order to operate the device correctly. MagnaWave offers Red Light training in their education curriculum, or you can visit the Association of PEMF Professionals (AOPP) website and take their Red Light training course. Please note that you should always consult a physician before adding any modality to your routine.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF): How It Works

Like Red Lights, Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF) work at the cellular level. PEMF penetrates every cell, tissue, organ, and bone to stimulate and rejuvenate cellular function. By increasing oxygen production and releasing energy, it allows the body to “move electrons correctly” as Dr. Myers says. PEMF also creates better stem cell growth which allows the body to gain faster healing cycles.

“If I combine a modality that changes how light is moved around (red light), and I combine it with a modality that’s helping my electrons do it correctly (PEMF), I have something that changes health exponentially.”

-Dr. Amanda Myers, M.D.

Stacking Modalities to Optimize Results

Stacking PEMF and Red Light maximizes cellular function and increases the rate of each modality’s benefit. One webinar commenter notes that she used Red Light and PEMF on a golden doodle who was healing from a mass removal. She said the combination of the two devices sped up healing time and even caused the hair to grow back over the wound in 8 weeks.

Dr. Myers also discusses the benefit of using both modalities over the course of 30-60 days for chronic pain, like arthritis or hip dysplasia. Once again, please consult a physician before using either modality.
