Stacking Modalities: PEMF and Red Light Therapy
About
MagnaWave President Alane Paulley sat down with Dr. Amanda Myers, M.D. in a live webinar to talk about the benefits of Red Light Therapy and Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF), and how they work together to optimize cellular health.
Alane and Dr. Myers explained how each modality functions, answered commenters’ questions, and shared anecdotes about the results they have seen using each modality. Watch the webinar or keep reading to get the breakdown.
Red Light Therapy: How it Works
Red light devices use LED lights to create red and infrared wavelengths, as well as heat to repair and regenerate cells and tissues. These wavelengths penetrate 5-7 cm into the body and rapidly reproduce cellular structures, improving overall cellular function.
Clients see improvements in wound healing, muscle and joint pains, and bone growth. Red light also increases collagen production, aiding in hair growth, skin elasticity, acne treatment, and other skin conditions like ringworm and hives.
The Science Behind Red Light Therapy
The human body is a collection of cells made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. While protons and neutrons remain static, electrons are constantly moving and are responsible for the body’s functions. For this movement to occur, electrons need to exchange photons—light particles that carry waves of electromagnetic radiation.
Dr. Myers describes electrons and photons as a currency. Electrons act like cash, exchanged in the body to facilitate cellular functions. Photons, on the other hand, function as coins, charged and exchanged by electrons to enable movement. Red Light Therapy uses infrared wavelengths to regulate the movement of photons, influencing electron activity and improving overall cellular health.
Using Red Light Therapy
Red Light Therapy devices have different strengths, with timers ranging from 30 to 60 seconds. MagnaWave offers an 11.5 W Red Light device called the ROC, which stands for Regeneration, Oxygenation, and Circulation. This modality can be held in one spot or moved around the body during treatment. Dr. Myers advises that the body can only absorb a limited amount of light per minute, so using Red Light Therapy once or twice a day is recommended for optimal results.
Additionally, darker colors absorb infrared wavelengths faster, making the therapy more potent for individuals with darker skin tones, hair colors, or tattoos. If discomfort arises from the heat, holding the device about two inches above the skin can help alleviate it.
Importance of Proper Training
Understanding individual sensitivities is key when using Red Light Therapy. Practitioners should complete proper training to ensure the device is operated correctly. MagnaWave provides Red Light training as part of its education curriculum, and the Association of PEMF Professionals (AOPP) offers additional training courses. Always consult a physician before incorporating any new modality into your routine.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy: How It Works
Like Red Light Therapy, Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF) work at the cellular level. PEMF penetrates every cell, tissue, organ, and bone to stimulate and rejuvenate cellular function. By increasing oxygen production and releasing energy, PEMF allows the body to “move electrons correctly,” as Dr. Myers describes. Additionally, PEMF promotes stem cell growth, enabling faster healing cycles.
“If I combine a modality that changes how light is moved around (Red Light) with a modality that helps my electrons function correctly (PEMF), I have something that changes health exponentially.”
– Dr. Amanda Myers, M.D.
Stacking Modalities to Optimize Results
Combining PEMF and Red Light Therapy enhances cellular function and maximizes the benefits of both treatments. One webinar commenter shared a case where she used both modalities on a golden doodle recovering from a mass removal. She observed a significantly faster healing time, with the dog’s hair growing back over the wound in just eight weeks.
Dr. Myers also recommends using both modalities over a 30-60 day period to manage chronic conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. As always, consult a physician before using either therapy.
